“Gujarat Titans Outshine Sunrisers Hyderabad in Exciting TATA IPL 2024 Encounter”

Gujarat Titans (GT) extended their dominance at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 12 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. A strong bowling performance, combined with a solid effort by the batting unit, secured GT their second win of the 2024 season. In the warm afternoon in Ahmedabad, SRH captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first. Coming off their recent high-scoring match, SRH appeared confident facing the GT bowling attack. Unlike their previous match, SRH started steadily and did not accelerate too quickly in the powerplay. Travis Head took an attacking approach, while Mayank Agarwal played more cautiously and was dismissed in the fifth over trying to flick Azmatullah Omarzai over backward square-leg. Abhishek Sharma, on the other hand, was aggressive and welcomed Rashid Khan with two sixes in the last over of the powerplay. However, Head was bowled by Noor Ahmad in the ninth over for 19, attempting a slog.

The notable aspect of SRH’s innings was that GT kept taking wickets at regular intervals, despite the batters getting starts and showing aggression. The highest partnership of the innings was 45 runs for the sixth wicket, between Abdul Samad and Shahbaz Ahmed, which provided some momentum towards the end. However, none of the SRH batters managed to go beyond 30, with Abhishek and Samad top-scoring with 29 each. Four batters got starts but failed to convert them into big scores. Mohit Sharma was the standout bowler for GT, finishing with figures of 3 for 25 in his four overs, including two wickets in the final over, which was crucial in restricting SRH to 162.

Chasing 163 for victory, GT got off to a solid start thanks to Wriddhiman Saha. The wicketkeeper-batsman played his shots in the powerplay, finding gaps and clearing the infield. He smashed a six over mid-wicket off Jaydev Unadkat, setting the tone for the chase. Shahbaz, the left-arm spinner, provided SRH with their first breakthrough when Saha mistimed a shot and was caught at mid-on. Sai Sudharsan, who replaced Mohit as an Impact Player, joined Shubman Gill in the middle, and together they steadied the innings. Gill accelerated after Saha’s dismissal, playing some aggressive strokes, including a lofted six over wide long-off. Sudharsan also looked confident, flicking Bhuvneshwar Kumar through mid-wicket for a boundary. The pair added 38 runs before the first strategic time-out. However, shortly after the break, Gill was caught at long-on off Mayank Markande’s bowling.

GT promoted David Miller to No. 4 to guide the chase with his experience and build a partnership with Sudharsan. Initially, they focused on rotating the strike without taking unnecessary risks. As the match entered the final five overs, GT needed 49 runs, and SRH would have harbored hopes of a comeback, especially after their recent successful defense against MI at the same venue. However, those hopes were dashed as Miller and Sudharsan attacked Markande in the 16th over, scoring 24 runs. Miller, despite appearing to be hampered by an injury and receiving treatment from the GT physio, cleared the boundary twice, while Sudharsan hit one over long on for a maximum. Sudharsan was dismissed soon after for 45, caught at mid-wicket off Cummins, but by then, the required rate had reduced to a run-a-ball.

Vijay Shankar joined Miller, and they calmly guided GT to victory with five balls to spare. Miller sealed the win with a six over long-off, finishing unbeaten on 44.
